Is Colon Hydrotherapy Safe?
July 2025
Colon hydrotherapy, also known as a colon cleanse or colonic, is a straightforward procedure that has been practised since the times of the ancient Egyptians. Colon hydrotherapy involves cleansing the colon of accumulated waste and harmful bacteria; resetting the digestive system.
While colon hydrotherapy is not a new practice, it has gained popularity over the last 10 or so years and has become a professionally recognised practice. However, the practice of colon hydrotherapy has raised several questions – the most common being “Is colon hydrotherapy safe?”
Colon hydrotherapy and gut health
The gastrointestinal system, also known as the gut, comprises the stomach, intestines, and colon. The gut is home to over 200 different species of bacteria and microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome, which helps break down food and facilitate nutrient absorption. However, not all gut bacteria is good – there are certain types of bacteria in the gut microbiome that can be harmful to our health.
When these harmful bacteria don’t impact the gut, our digestive system can function properly, which can increase energy and concentration, boost the immune system, help detoxify the liver, support weight management, alleviate bloating, and generally relieve constipation.
Colon hydrotherapy gently flushes out the colon and removes the (bad) bacteria, returning the gut to its natural state and allowing the digestive system to function more effectively and improve gut health.
Is colon hydrotherapy safe?
Yes, colon hydrotherapy is safe when you choose a high-quality colonic clinic, like Kuyu Colonics. A colon hydrotherapy session involves a gentle infusion of warm, filtered water into the colon through the rectum. The water circulates throughout the colon, softening and loosening accumulated waste, debris, and toxins, which are naturally released as the water is expelled. The process is discreet, hygienic, and odour-free.
At Kuyu Colonics, we specialise in closed-method hydrotherapy and utilise state-of-the-art, medically graded equipment that is thoroughly sanitised between sessions. Closed-method irrigation is performed by our professionally trained therapists who are able to provide guidance and support throughout the procedure. Our therapists can adjust the temperature and pressure of the infusion to ensure a comfortable and safe treatment.
With that said, colon hydrotherapy is not suitable for everyone, particularly individuals with certain health problems or diseases. Your colon hydrotherapist must conduct a consultation before your session to determine the safest treatment for you.
Is colon hydrotherapy safe for everyone?
As mentioned, colon hydrotherapy is not suitable for everyone. Those with conditions like haemorrhoids, anal fissures, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis), and other conditions that affect the anus or bowel may be at risk of injury from the tube or water used in the colon cleanse process. Other common contraindications to colon hydrotherapy include, but are not limited to:
- Severe haemorrhoids, severe bleeding, or rectal bleeding
- Diverticulitis
- Active chemotherapy treatment for any type of cancer
- Seizures or epilepsy
- Medications or conditions that may weaken the intestinal walls
- Congestive heart failure, recent heart attack or cardiac surgery
- Colostomy
- Severe anaemia
- Aneurysms
- Pregnancy
At Kuyu Colonics, we take extensive hygienic measures and ensure that our clients don’t have any of the above contraindications before undergoing a colon cleanse. Dedicated to our clients’ wellbeing, we educate everyone who comes into our clinic about the benefits of colon hydrotherapy, ensuring it aligns with their specific objectives.
